On December 3, the Strategic Development Forum of Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences and an academic activity were held in Guangzhou when Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital celebrated its 75th anniversary. The bronze statues of the founding president and the second president of the provincial hospital were unveiled at the event to honor the "provincial medical spirit", and a number of layout plans of new hospitals and scientific research bases were released, which will support the development of health industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area through scientific innovation.

Zhu Hong, secretary and director of the Party Group of Health Commission of Guangdong Province, Zhong Nanshan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chan Sun Chi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wang Yingjun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Zhao Yuliang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Li Baojian, former vice president of Sun Yat-sen University and other experts attended the event. More than 500 participants attended the opening ceremony, including hospital leaders, health care leaders and experts, and the leading group and staff representatives of Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital.

Zhu Hong, secretary of the party group and director of Health Commission of Guangdong Province, said in his speech at the opening ceremony that as the vanguard of the construction of high-level hospitals in Guangdong, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital has always aimed at the international forefront and national strategic objectives. Meanwhile, fully utilizing the location, talents and technologies of the Greater Bay Area, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital has achieved outstanding results in forming a great team, building a great platform and implementing great projects.

Zhu Hong also hoped that the provincial hospital continued to be the "leading goose" in the building of healthy Guangdong and the "vanguard" in the reform of the medical system through active exploration and experience-sharing of public hospital reform, and make more contributions to the high-quality development of health undertakings in Guangdong.

Launch Huangpu Branch to Create a New Pattern of "One Body and Two Wings"

At the forum, the signing ceremony of cooperation between Guangzhou Huangpu District People's Government and Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital was held. Yu Xueqing, president of the provincial hospital, told reporters that as one of Guangdong’s earliest five high-level hospitals, the provincial hospital will create a "One Body and Two Wings" pattern for the construction of high-level hospitals. After the launch of the construction of Huangpu Branch, the "One Body and Two Wings" pattern where the Baiyun and Huangpu Branches are around the provincial hospital on Dongchuan Road will gradually take shape, which is also supported by the national cardiovascular regional medical center and Guangdong international cardiovascular medical center.

Yu Xueqing introduced that during the 14th Five-year Plan period, the provincial hospital will vigorously promote the platform construction of the Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences, establish a great team and a great platform to support great projects, and complete a number of world-leading scientific research achievements within 3-5 years.

Accroding to Yu, the Baiyun Branch, which was launched in April, is a 3.06-billion-yuan project. Focusing on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, the branch will also deliver other health care services, which will improve the medical services around Baiyun District. The Huangpu Branch’s priority is building a trauma emergency system and platform, and integrating the "prevention, treatment and rehabilitation" of natural disasters and industrial trauma in one system with experts in burns and trauma such as Academician Fu Xiaobing, which will set a good example for the Greater Bay Area.

Facilitate Scientific Research Transformation to Support the Building of a Healthy Greater Bay Area

In order to deepen the integration of scientific research and industry, the unveiling ceremony of "Demonstration Clinical Hospital of Achievement Transformation of NMPA-MOST-MIIT-NHC Biomaterial Innovation Cooperation Platform" was also held on the same day.

Supported by the National Medical Products Administration, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Health Commission in April, the biomaterial innovation cooperation platform was jointly initiated and established by 21 units. This platform is intended to create an open and collaborative biomaterial innovation system by coordinating resources of all parties and promote the innovation of independent R&D and the development of health industry. The platform will go further and break through the bottleneck of achievement transformation, deepen the industry-education-science integration, and promote emerging pillar industries of high-end medical devices.

To meet the people’s health demands with guarantee and quality and make sure they can enjoy the benefits of international cutting-edge researches as soon as possible, it is vital to accelerate the transformation of clinical application of medical researches by capitalizing the advantages in terms of policy, location and scientific innovation of the Greater Bay Area, according to Yu Xueqing.

The "Founding President" and "Guardian President" of This Hospital Are Famous. Do You Know Who They Are?

On the 75th anniversary of the founding of the provincial hospital, the bronze statues of Li Ting'an, founding president of Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, and Zhong Shifan, the second president, were established in order to spread the "provincial medical spirit". Their sons, Professor Li Baojian and Academician Zhong Nanshan, were invited to unveil the statues. The hospital also set up awards in the names of the two presidents to inspire innovation.

Professor Li Baojian, the son of Li Ting’an, recalled how his father had had surgery for cancer three times and was still running around for the site selection of Guangzhou Central Hospital (the predecessor of Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital) every day. "After choosing the hospital site, facing the desolate land, my father said: ‘although I am seriously ill, I must work with you to build the Guangzhou Central Hospital.’"

Academician Zhong Nanshan told his touching story with Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital: "I was 10 years old when I followed my father to Guangzhou from Guiyang in 1946. The first person I met was President Li Ting’an. His third son, Li Baoliang, was my classmate. So what Professor Li Baojian just said (the history of the founding of the hospital) sounds all familiar to me because I was already 10 when the hospital was founded. Every day, I waited for my father to get off work on HuiFu West Road."

Zhong’s father Zhong Shifan was the second president of Guangzhou Central Hospital. On the eve of national liberation in 1949, the Minister of Health of the Kuomintang Central Committee came to Guangzhou and ordered Zhong Shifan, then president of Guangzhou Central Hospital, to carry the hospital's property and transfer his family to Taiwan. Zhong Shifan resolutely refused and stayed with his family in Guangzhou. On July 15, 1950, Zhong Shifan counted the hospital materials one by one and handed them over to the People's Liberation Army. On the 410-page Inventory of Property Transfer of Guangzhou Central Hospital in 1950, even a book and a penny are clearly counted.
