Amidst the balmy March breeze, heralding the arrival of spring, the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery and the Department of Thoracic Surgery collaborated to conduct a successful academic exchange event, fostering the communication of diagnostic and therapeutic expertise between Chinese and Eastern European medical professionals. Held on March 13 and 14, 2024, the event drew participation from 8 distinguished experts in gastrointestinal and thoracic surgery hailing from Belarus, Estonia, and other Eastern European nations, who engaged in fruitful academic discourse and surgical demonstrations at our hospital.
On the morning of March 13, the Eastern European delegation of visiting surgeons arrived at our hospital. Led by Dr. Wang Junjiang, Chief of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, they conducted group ward rounds and a guided tour. The Gastrointestinal Surgery team showcased our hospital’s professional and high-quality medical care to the delegation from Eastern Europe.
Following the ward rounds, the Eastern European doctors visited the operating rooms for observation. Utilizing our hospital’s state-of-the-art surgical equipment and with the professional coordination of the surgical and anesthesia teams, Chief Dr. Wang Junjiang’s surgical team demonstrated procedures such as robot-assisted radical gastrectomy, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and ICG laparoscopic radical resection for colorectal cancer. Furthermore, Chief Dr. Ben Xiaosong’s team showcased uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic segmentectomy and radical pneumonectomy, as well as thoracoscopic-laparoscopic esophagectomy, integrating preoperative 3D reconstruction planning with fluorescence thoracoscopy. The surgical teams displayed their proficiency, standard practices, and collaborative abilities.
The Operating Room nurse guided the Eastern European doctors on a tour of the operating rooms, delivering explanations and introductions in fluent English, demonstrating our hospital’s advancing international communication proficiency. The skilled surgical techniques and state-of-the-art surgical equipment piqued the interest of the visiting surgeons, fostering a vibrant exchange that carried on into the afternoon academic lecture.
In the afternoon, the Eastern European Thoracic and Abdominal Surgery Academic Exchange Seminar was held in the Surgical Teaching and Research Office on the 25th floor of the main building. Li Yong, Vice President of Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital, extended a warm welcome to the visit of the Eastern European doctors and then provided an overview of our hospital’s history and clinical experience in the field of gastroenterology. Chief Dr. Wang Junjiang and Chief Dr. Ben Xiaosong respectively presented introductions to the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery and the Department of Thoracic Surgery, covering aspects such as the history of the Hospital and Departments, team composition, specialized techniques, teaching and research initiatives, and clinical research outcomes.
During the Chinese clinical experience sharing session, Dr. Hu Weixian from the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery presented on “Digestive Tract Reconstruction in Total Laparoscopic Gastrectomy for Gastric Cancer”, explaining different methods of digestive tract reconstruction while also sharing surgical experience from the department. Dr. Lü Zejian from the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery shared a specialized technique of ICG fluorescence laparoscopy and its application in gastrointestinal surgery, highlighting the advantages of ICG through surgical case examples. Dr. Tian Dan from the Department of Thoracic Surgery shared recent advances in perioperative immunotherapy for lung cancer based on clinical diagnosis and treatment experience, while also discussing and looking ahead to hot topics in immunotherapy. Dr. Xu Tengfei from the Department of Anesthesiology introduced the basic overview of his department to the Eastern European doctors and shared our hospital’s collaborative experience in implementing Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) in the field of anesthesiology through case examples. The Eastern European doctors also shared their experiences, mainly presenting an overview of the Eastern European healthcare system.
This event not only facilitated academic and clinical technical exchanges between our Gastrointestinal Surgery and Thoracic Surgery teams and their counterparts from Eastern Europe but also accumulated experience for our hospital in organizing international academic exchange activities, thereby laying a solid foundation for future endeavors on the international academic stage.
