It learned from the recently held press conference on the special subject of high-level hospital construction in Guangdong Province that since the Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital was selected as the first phase of high-level hospitals to be constructed in Guangdong in 2018, the hospital has delivered a remarkable report in 3 years: in the 2019 national tertiary public hospital performance appraisal recently released by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China, Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital was awarded the highest grade A++ for the first time and ranked 10th among 2,413 tertiary public hospitals nationwide .
Yufei Duan, director and secretary of the leading party member’s group of Health Commission of Guangdong Province, attended the news conference, and introduced the construction achievements of high-level hospitals in Guangdong and the next step deployment. He indicated that “the first phase of 30 high-level hospitals in Guangdong took the initiative and accelerated the development around the six main tasks of technology, scientific research, talent, discipline, system and demonstration, and the construction results were outstanding”.
According to the requirements of the implementation plan, Guangdong Province will promote high-level hospitals to make new breakthroughs and new achievements in the construction of cutting-edge medical technology highlands, high-level clinical research platforms, high-end medical talent teams, first-class medical disciplines, modern hospital management systems, and radiation driven networks. It will accelerate the availability of quality medical resources and regional balanced layout, build an indomitable medical and healthcare pattern, and make more development achievements to benefit people’s health.
Xueqing Yu, president of Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital, said at the news conference that with the care and instruction of the provincial party committee, the provincial government and the provincial health commission, we have the honor to be one of the first batch high-level hospitals, and usher in the best historical opportunity of development. In line with the international advanced level, the hospital has been steadily pushing forward the construction of a high-level hospital based on the three development strategies of “disciplines, platforms and teams”, with preponderant disciplines taking the lead, gathering key clinical scientific problems and driven by innovative development:
Adhere to the president responsibility under the leadership of the party committee, and constantly explore and improve the construction of a modern hospital management system under the new situation. The party committee leads, the administrator takes charge, the committee for discipline inspection supervises, and the higher and lower levels are united as one. The hospital insists on the historical mission of public hospitals and fully embodies public welfare of public hospitals; insists on people first, adheres to the concept of staff-centered and patient-centered in medical care, and administrative functional departments focus on medical education and research to continuously improve medical quality and service level.
Invigorate “Heart”: Since the construction of the high-level hospital, Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital has been approved as the co-builder with the party committee and the province into the Regional Medical Center for Cardiovascular Diseases of China and one of the four “national training bases for heart transplantation physicians” in China. It has completed three world’s first and four China’s first medical techniques, ranked third nationwide in the volume of heart transplantation for four consecutive years, and carried out the world’s first one-stop surgery of TAVR+TEVAR via the femoral artery, China’s first minimally invasive cardiac surgery for pregnant women, minimally invasive totally endoscopic treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, minimally invasive totally endoscopic replacement of double valves, and other international and domestic pioneering techniques.

Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital has formulated and implemented “great plans and grand strategies” and continued to build “large platforms, large teams and large projects”. In 2019, the hospital has introduced 76 high-level talents. In 2020, the hospital doubled the number of projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, and published research papers in full in the New England Journal of Medicine, which is ranked first, and the British Medical Journal, which is ranked fourth, achieving its new goal of publishing papers in top international journals with original copies.
Making Active Exploration and Improving the Construction of a Modern Hospital
The hospital ranked 10th in the 2019 national tertiary public hospital performance appraisal, 43 places higher compared with last year; the hospital built the first grassroots party building research base in a public hospital in Guangdong; empowered hospital development through 5G smart hospital construction, completed the first 5G+3D+AI surgery live broadcast in China, achieving double improvement in medical quality and patient service experience; the hospital has established various forms of specialty alliances, hospital alliances, and hospital-enterprise alliances to bring enhancement of the grassroots capabilities.
