Chinese and US Experts Online Sharing Session on Fighting against COVID-19

On a video conference held at 7:30 a.m. on May 8, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital shared its experience in COVID-19 prevention and control with experts from Valley Health System (Valley Hospital) in the United States. The meeting was chaired by Yu Xueqing, President of Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital. Led by President Yu, six experts with rich front-line experience shared their insights on epidemic prevention and control. These experts included Gao Xinglin, Director of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Wang Shouhong, Director of the ICU Department of Guangdong Institute of Gerontology, Xue Ling, Administrative Director of the Cardiac Care Unit of the Department of Cardiology, Fu Xia, Chief Nurse of the Blood Purification Center, Li Shixin, member of the first Guangdong’s medical team to support Hubei, etc. Chen Li, Deputy Director of the Health Care Bureau for Cadres of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, and Richard Zhang, Principal of Huaxia Chinese School at Bergen, attended the meeting.

"Viruses respect no borders, and saving lives should always be our first priority. As the COVID-19 is sweeping across the globe, it has posed a great threat to human society. China is willing to share its experience in epidemic prevention, control and treatment, cooperate with, and provide assistance in any way it can to other countries in the world, and Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital is honored to take on this mission." President Yu Xueqing said. He also presented light microscopic observation of various organs such as lung, liver, heart, kidney, and lymph to explain the impact, imaging, and pathology changes brought by COVID-19, and shared successful treatments.

Vice President Joseph Yallowitz made an introduction of Valley Health System and the 14 experts therefrom present at the video conference. He said, "We are very excited to be a part of this sharing session. Since New Jersey is only 25 miles from Manhattan, the epicenter of COVID-19 in the US, we hope to learn some Chinese experience from this session." It is learned that Valley Health System, with more than 5,000 employees, has received and treated 1,100 COVID-19 patients.

Three experts, Gao Xinglin, Wang Shouhong and Xue Ling, introduced the hospital's experience in treating COVID-19 patients from various perspectives, including classification, treatment, airway management of severe/critical cases, impacts on the heart, and treatments. US experts consulted their Chinese counterparts on airway lavage, effectiveness of chloroquine, cytokine storm, immune globulin, anticoagulation, and other concerns.

"Chinese experience is very impressive. As we are going through the severest stage of the epidemic, our patients will benefit greatly from the thorough experience shared by Chinese experts at this critical moment." Vice President Joseph Yallowitz concluded by expressing his appreciation.
