From February 28 to March 2, 2021 (Beijing time), ISPD-EuroPD 2021 was solemnly held online. This conference was jointly hosted by ISPD and EuroPD, for which Professor Yu Xueqing, as President of ISPD, delivered the opening address. By March 10, the conference had attracted 1,463 participants from 82 countries and regions, set up 30 academic sessions, and received a total of 425 abstracts and 285 electronic posters.
On the evening of February 28, Professor Yu Xueqing pointed out in his speech that the 18th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis (IFPD), which was scheduled to be held in Glasgow, Scotland in May 2020, was finally postponed to February 28, 2021 and held online due to the impact of COVID-19, which was the first online annual meeting for IFPD by then. Mr. Yu particularly thanked all the staff for their hard work and participants for their attention. And he said that “the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis (IFPD) has grown to be an inclusive and innovation-driven organization that aims to explore cutting-edge studies on peritoneal dialysis for patients with chronic kidney disease or acute renal failure”. Meanwhile, he expressed the hope that ISPD platform will one day become a media through which China’s experience can be leveraged to better serve doctors and kidney patients around the world.
Established in 1984, the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) mainly aims to promote the development of the discipline of peritoneal dialysis and, through international scientific conferences and publications, improve the level of knowledge regarding peritoneal dialysis. On July 15, 2020, ISPD officially announced the election of Professor Yu Xueqing as the president. This is the first time that a nephrology expert from Mainland China has been elected as president of an international academic body. This conference marks the first step for Chinese nephrology to go global and rank forefront among peers worldwide, and is also an important demonstration of the international influence of Chinese nephrology in the field of peritoneal dialysis.
