In August 2022, at the 2022 World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) held in Vienna, the capital of Austria, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) presented the Tsuguo Naruke Lectureship Award for Surgery to Professor Zhong Wenzhao, Head of our Lung Cancer Research Institute and Vice Director of our Cancer Hospital to commend his outstanding contributions in surgical technology innovation fields including lung cancer perioperative treatment, multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment as well as three-dimensional reconstruction, vascular flowing area and fluorescence analysis.

The Tsuguo Naruke Lectureship Award for Surgery was set up for commemorating the deceased famous thoracic surgeon Tsuguo Naruke. Professor Tsuguo Naruke was one of the founders of lung cancer surgery in the modern world and had made great contributions to determining the dissection scope of lung cancer lymph nodes. The award aims to commend global leaders fighting against chest tumor. Professor Zhong Wenzhao is the first Chinese scholar to win this award.

Professor Zhong Wenzhao focuses on the standardized diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer and the improvement of prognosis of patients. His achievements in lung cancer have been recognized by peers both at home and abroad. He has won the second prize of National Scientific and Technological Advance Award, the first prize of Science and Technology Award given by the Chinese Medical Association, the first prize of Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award, Guangdong Provincial Ding Ying Science and technology Award and “May 1” Labor Medal. Professor Zhong Wenzhao has been in charge of 9 major projects under the National Natural Science Foundation and at provincial and municipal level. His series of research findings have been published in the highly-influential international journals, including Lancet Oncol, J Clin Oncol, Nat Commun, J Thorac Oncol and J Extracell Vesicles. He is an associate editor of J Thorac Oncol (IF 20.1), the official journal of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, and has an important influence in reducing lung cancer disease burden and advancing diagnosis and treatment.
