Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Summit Forum on Biomedicine and the First Medical Science and Technology Week is Held in Guangzhou

From September 24 to September 29, “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Summit Forum on Biomedicine and the First Medical Science and Technology Week” was held in Guangzhou. Under the guidance of Guangdong Provincial Health Commission and Guangdong Medical Association, the forum was sponsored by Guangdong Academy of Medical Science and Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital, and co-sponsored by journals People’s Health and Biophysics Report.

Zhu Hong, secretary and director of the Leading Party Members’ Group of the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission; Yao Zhibin, chairman of Guangdong Medical Association; academicians Fan Daiming, Dong Jiahong, Wang Yingjun, Su Guohui, Ma Ding, Liu Liang, Xu Tao, Chen Yeguang and others attended the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was presided over by Zhou Lin, secretary of the Party committee of Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital and Guangdong Academy of Medical Science. Yu Xueqing, president of Guangdong Academy of Medical Science and Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital, served as the conference president.

Director Zhu Hong delivered a speech at the conference. He pointed out that since the 18th CPC National Congress, the CPC Central Committee with Xi Jinping at its core has promoted innovation as a national strategy. The golden age of applying scientific and technological innovations to medical practice has come. In accordance with the decisions and plans of the CPC Central Committee, Guangdong Province has always been people-oriented, deepened the implementation of the innovation-driven development strategy, actively distributed key areas and key technologies of medical science, and promoted the rapid development of the health sector. The Forum has built a high-quality academic exchange platform for experts, scholars and health management practitioners from all over the world through a multi-perspective and interdisciplinary dialogue mechanism. We hope that the forum will be turned into a high-quality brand project of biomedical innovation and development.

In the speech, chairman Yao Zhibin pointed out that it was the right time to bring up “Biomedicine” as the theme of the forum in the context of a new round of technological and industrial revolution, especially for the application of technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence, mobile internet and 5G. He believed that through in-depth exchanges, we could give full play to the international advantages of Hong Kong and Macao and Guangdong’s advantages as a pioneer in the reform and opening up. This forum focuses on the forefront topics of world medicine, and gathers the innovative resources of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, which will certainly contribute to the development of biomedicine and health career in China.

Secretary Zhou Lin officiated at the opening ceremony of the forum. She pointed out that the Outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035 clearly stated that we should give priority to safeguarding people’s health. It required us to actively promote the innovative and sustainable development of public health, and strengthen the scientific and technological support for the  prevention and treatment of major diseases and the development of health services. The purpose of this forum is to invite the top medical experts and scientists in China to come together to exchange and discuss the world medical frontier research. Lead by disciplines and driven by innovation, this forum will promote the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, facilitate the construction of Healthy China, and serve the practice of Healthy Guangdong.

In the speech, Yu Xueqing said that to seize the opportunities arising from the 14th Five-Year Plan and to take advantage of the talent and technological advantages brought together in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital will focus on the international frontier topics and national strategic goals, and continue to promote the construction of a high-level hospital. GDPH will vigorously promote the construction of the Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences to build its own platform and incubate world-leading clinical and basic research achievements. Through the large-scale planning and construction of large teams, platforms and projects, there will be a number of world-leading scientific research achievements and highlights in 3-5 years. Guangdong will blow the most powerful sound of China in the world with Chinese data, evidence, standard, experience and model.

Signing Ceremony of the Joint Laboratories of Academicians

Academy of Medical Sciences Incubates Seven New Clinical Transformation Models

At the opening ceremony, a contract signing ceremony was held for the Joint Laboratories of Academicians of Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences. President Yu Xueqing signed contracts with academician Dong Jiahong of Tsinghua University, academician Wang Yingjun of Guangdong Research Institute of New Biomaterials and High-End Medical Devices, academician Ma Ding of Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College of HUST, academician Liu Liang of Macau University of Science and Technology, academician Su Guohui of Jinan University, academician Xu Tao of Bioland Laboratory, and academician Chen Yeguang of Bioland Laboratory (Max-Planck Center). Director Zhu Hong, Chairman Yao Zhibin, representatives of the academicians’ team and leaders of Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital witnessed the signing of the contract.

Yu Xueqing pointed out that the Joint Laboratories of Academicians would implement the functions of Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences set by the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and the provincial government, and play an innovative and leading role. Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences is a comprehensive platform with basic laboratory, clinical laboratory, translational laboratory, epidemiology, statistics and other resources. It has established the Hospital Management Institute of Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences, the Medical Insurance Service Quality Evaluation Center of Guangdong Province, the Hospital Management Evaluation and Quality Control Center of Guangdong Province, etc.. In the future, it will also undertake the construction of Guangdong Medical Big Data Center, Institute of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, Institute of Integrated Medicine and so on. The Joint Laboratories of Academicians is established in the Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences to integrate the superior resources of all parties, accelerate the incubation of achievements, complete the “last mile” of clinical transformation, facilitate the medical science construction of Guangdong Province and benefit the patients.

Academician Fan Daiming stressed that the development of medicine has now called for the integration of medical resources to solve more difficult problems. The Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences was able to make full use of the advantages of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in medical treatment and the unique resources, so as to integrate the high-level talents from all over the country and even the world. It was a first step in the greater bay area and even in the whole country. He believed that this model was wise and forward looking, toward which the future of medicine was oriented.

Academician Dong Jiahong pointed out that his laboratory in list of the Joint Laboratories of Academicians focused on the innovative application of smart medical technology to hepatobiliary diseases. It would be the first smart hepatobiliary surgery laboratory in Guangdong Province. He hoped to use intelligent technology to solve more hepatobiliary disease treatment and technical problems, so as to improve the treatment level of hepatobiliary diseases in Guangdong province and even the whole country.

Academician Ma Ding said he would focus on the quality control of ovarian cancer with the clinical data on the ovarian big data platform, so as to promote the quality control of clinical treatment for ovarian cancer. This could provide a decision-making basis for tiered diagnosis and treatment, and enhance the 5-year survival rate of ovarian cancer patients.

Building an in-depth exchange platform to promote the integrated development of medical and health services in the Greater Bay Area

In recent years, with the development of science and technology, China’s biomedical research has made great progress. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area brought together outstanding talents and technologies in the field of biomedicine, established a unique platform and gathered resources suitable for the development of biomedicine science and technology industry. At the Forum, through the thematic sharing of academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and famous experts at home and abroad, experts, scholars, hospital administrators and representatives of enterprises gathered together to exchange and discuss issues in the fields of life science, basic, clinical and translational medicine, fully demonstrating the world’s cutting-edge advances in the biomedical field. The forum focused on the goal of integrated development, promoted in-depth cooperation in the medical and health sectors in the Greater Bay Area, and pooled top talents and cutting-edge technologies in the biomedical field, so as to build an international academic stage, speed up the transformation of scientific research results, serve the urgent needs of disease prevention and treatment in the society, and contribute to the plan of empowering Guangdong with biomedicine and Healthy China construction.

In the academic report session of the main forum, many academicians, experts and scholars shared their opinions on and discussed dozens of issues. The conference also set up 13 sub-forums of cardiology, cardiosurgery, structural heart disease in South China, critical illness, neurology clinical and basic progress, psychiatric research, basic and translational medicine, geriatrics, interdisciplinary, obstetrics and gynecology, medical imaging artificial intelligence, paediatrics, and precision treatment of tumors. These sub-forums covered multiple fields, such as clinical medicine, public health, basic research, and artificial intelligence.


Since 2019, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Summit Forum on Biomedicine has been held for two consecutive years. The experts and scholars at the conference have made great contributions to the innovation and development of biomedicine in China, and accumulated many typical cases and excellent experiences.
