The 61st European Renal Association (ERA) Congress and European Nephrology Annual Meeting was held in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden from May 23-26, 2024. As one of the largest international nephrology conferences globally, the congress gathered the latest advances in the field of nephrology worldwide. Top academic experts in nephrology from around the world, including several key experts responsible for formulating KDIGO guidelines, attended this congress to report and exchange on the latest developments in nephrology and share interpretations of the latest revisions to KDIGO clinical practice guidelines. The theme of this conference was “Rethinking Kidney Health and Transforming Kidney Care”. Nephrologists from dozens of countries submitted paper abstracts for sharing and exchange. The number of submissions from Chinese experts ranked third, fully demonstrating Chinese scholars’ enthusiasm for actively participating in cutting-edge world forums and acquiring new knowledge.

Dr. Li Dantong from the Department of Nephrology at Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital was selected for an oral presentation at the conference. The corresponding authors of this study are Prof. Sun Liangzhong from the Department of Pediatrics at Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, and Prof. Ye Zhiming from the Department of Nephrology at Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital.

The national “14th Five-Year Plan” public health strategic plan for genetic and rare diseases states that priority will be given to supporting research on the pathogenesis and prevention strategies for genetic and rare diseases, ensuring the health of the population throughout the life cycle. Nephronophthisis is the most common inherited cause of kidney failure in children. Dr. Li Dantong’s research elucidates the possibility of calpain-1 as an early intervention target for nephronophthisis, providing a theoretical basis for the development of early treatment drugs.

The appearance of young doctors from Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital on the international stage will inspire young scholars to continue bravely forward on the path of scientific research and courageously scale scientific heights.
